History:     Branningham Grove, a handsome brick building situated on a hill near Highway 26, was built ca. 1864. It has a colourful history, having served in the early 20th century as a brothel operated by the notorious Meg Matthews, and more recently has housed a series of restaurants, the most recent of which was Louis' Steakhouse.

Details:     The current owners of the building, Brampton-based developers Villarboit Development Corp., plan to demolish it and level the hill on which it sits, in order to construct a Future Shop, Value Village, Michaels and seven other stores. Although Owen Sound's Community Heritage and Planning Advisory Committee agrees that Branningham Grove has merit for designation under the Ontario Heritage Act and recommended last November that the building be added to the Heritage Register, the building has not been designated.

The committee will decide whether or not it plans to recommend city council protect the building under the Ontario Heritage Act at its meeting on August 6th.
