South Side of Colborne Street
35-151 Colborne StreetBrantford Ontario
|
Current Owner: |
City of Brantford | |
| History: | These three blocks include the longest contiguous stretch of pre-Confederation buildings in Ontario. This was the birthplace of commercial and industrial Brantford, and represents a unique commercial heritage streetscape. | |
| Details: | City Council has voted 6 to 5 to demolish these buildings, without any community consultation, and without a heritage impact study. Local, provincial, and national advocates have won us a brief stay of execution, but the buildings are in danger of imminent demolition. | |
|
What can you do to help: |
Because the demolition is funded by a federal stimulus grant through FedDev, you should contact your MP. Note that Colborne St. was brought up in the federal budget debate by Charlie Angus, the NDP heritage critic, who asked why stimulus spending was being used to demolish heritage buildings. The only person who can stop demolition is the provincial Minister of Tourism and Culture, Michael Chan. You can write to him at: michael.chan@ontario.ca Also write to your own MPP, of whatever party. Finally, sign our petition! http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/savethesouthside/ | |
