Port Dalhousie OMB Decision - ACO Supports Review

Urgent need for review because of conflicting OMB decisions

March 30, 2009

The ACO strongly supports an internal review of the February 26th decision of the OMB on the Port Tower project in Port Dalhousie.  A decision on a project in Vaughan issued just eight days earlier gave a totally different interpretation of the status of Heritage Conservation Districts under The Ontario Heritage Act, 2005.  This has raised fears in the heritage community about the status of HCDs.  The fear is that the Port Dalhousie decision puts the vast majority of Ontario's HCDs at risk of out-of-scale development or fragmented protection, contrary to the intention of the Act to strengthen protection for heritage in Ontario. Clarification is urgently needed.
